CEU Course Description

This course provides Nursing Home Administrators and Assisted Living Administrators with a comprehensive overview of diabetes mellitus, its biological mechanisms, long-term complications, evidence-based treatment strategies, and the administrative systems needed to maintain regulatory compliance and resident safety in a long-term care environment. Through a blend of clinical education and practical leadership guidance, participants will gain the knowledge and tools to foster a facility-wide culture of vigilance centered on person-centered diabetic care.

CEU Course Objectives

  1. Distinguish between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes by identifying the underlying biological mechanisms, including autoimmune cell destruction and insulin resistance, and explain how these differences shape care needs in the geriatric population.
  2. Identify the long-term complications of chronic hyperglycemia,  including cardiovascular disease, nephropathy, retinopathy, neuropathy, and diabetic foot ulcers, and describe how early detection and daily monitoring can reduce the risk of severe outcomes such as amputation.
  3. Evaluate evidence-based treatment strategies for diabetes management, including nutritional planning, physical activity programming, pharmacological interventions, and the role of modern technology such as continuous glucose monitors and insulin delivery systems.
  4. Design and implement staff training programs that empower clinical and non-clinical team members to recognize the signs of hypo- and hyperglycemia and respond appropriately, fostering an interdepartmental culture of observation and communication.
  5. Apply QAPI frameworks and federal regulatory standards, including F-684, F-686, F-800, and F-941, to ensure the facility maintains compliant, person-centered diabetes care protocols and minimizes risk of survey deficiencies.

This course expires on 05/15/2027
